Getting Started

Follow the steps below to get started on your home education journey. Click on the circles to link to external documents or sites.

Law Books

Read the Law

It is imperative that families take the time to read the home education law. There are many misconceptions about the content of the law and many gray areas. It is up to you to be informed about the legal requirements of home- schooling in Pennsylvania.

At the Library

Teach

There are endless ways to accomplish your goals as a home educator. Some suggestions are included in the link provided, but these are the tip of the iceberg.

High School Exterior

Notify the School District

If your child is currently in public school make sure you formally withdraw them from the district. Contact the district office to find out the correct procedures for doing so. â€‹At the same time, submit the required paperwork (see the next section).

Binder and Files

Develop a Portfolio

A Pennsylvania home education portfolio must include a log of "materials used" including a list of reading materials, and samples of the student's work. I suggest samples for each subject from the beginning, middle, and end of the school year.

School

Submit Paperwork

To begin homeschooling, submit educational objectives and an affidavit or unsworn declaration to the district office. The first time you homeschool, these are due before the first day of school for children who are 6 by September 1 or when you initially withdraw from public school. Thereafter, these documents are due by Aug. 1.

Schedule

Schedule an Evaluation

and Submit Paperwork

I will post evaluation dates in March.  For paperwork, there are two important dates:

1. June 30th: The evaluation is due to the district.

2. August 1: The affidavit or unsworn declaration and objectives are due to the school district for the upcoming school year.
